Yesterday was the March for Life in Washington, DC. Every year, thousands of people from all over America descend on our nation’s capital to make it known that they want to protect the lives of those in the womb from abortion. It’s a worthy cause.
Psalm 139:14-16 reminds us that He wonderfully made us and that He knew us when we were “made in secret.” King David adds that God saw Him as an “unformed substance.”
Yes, it’s good to work towards protecting life in the womb. To have a life taken away is tragic.
Yet, there is something just as tragic.
What about those who are born in difficult situations and forgotten about?
Aren’t they just as important a mission as the abortion issue?
How many untold numbers of children are growing up in poverty, despair, and abuse? How many are in the state-run foster system and have nowhere to call home or no one to tell them they are loved and valuable?
What about the mothers?
So many have little support after they give birth to their children. Many don’t have the money to take care of a child so they are forced to work and leave their babies in the care of someone else. Even then, they don’t have enough financial, emotional, or spiritual support.
I know that many great organizations are helping and ministering to these moms and their children. Yet, they don’t get anywhere near the support or recognition of the pro-life cause.
Today, I encourage you to look at the other side of the issue.
What about the mothers and their children who are just trying to survive?
Where is the church?
Where are the Christians?
Let’s not just talk about love and issues. Let’s put our faith into action and help people.
This last week, Nicole (my amazing wife) and I signed up to volunteer at a winter homeless shelter. It’s our way of helping make a difference for someone. Who knows what the journey will entail?
How will you step up for the causes that are important to you?
Blessings to you,
Father Don
