Since the dawn of humanity, the age-old question has plagued us… Is there a God?
For centuries the debate has raged and scientists have tried to answer the question, but can they?
There are far more questions than answers, but could the fact that we even ask questions be reason enough to demonstrate that God exists?
In the early 2000s, as a young man, I worked for an organization called Ambassadors for Christ as their Director of Development. They planted Chinese campus ministries at the top schools in the country to evangelize and disciple mainland Chinese students and prepare them for when they return to China.
One day, I had an opportunity to chat with an astrophysicist while driving to an event at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s one I’ll never forget. He told me He believed in God’s creation because things were too ordered to happen randomly. He stated that for our planet to exist as it does, the odds were astronomical. The sun, planets, and our galaxy all work harmoniously for Earth to create life. If our orbit was different by the smallest of fractions (which is influenced by the sun, planets, and galaxies), life wouldn’t exist here.
He asked me to look at my hand and noted that nothing else like it in all of creation exists. No other species share the capabilities of the human hand. Our hands are a marvel that can’t be explained, let alone the billions of bacteria in our bodies that work to make us what we are as human beings.
I’ve thought about that long and hard.
Over the last month, I’ve been learning from several Orthodox priests about their views regarding the physical and immaterial worlds around us (i.e., the heavenly places mentioned throughout Scripture). They argue that our minds (both conscious and subconscious) are the immaterial part of us connected to the spiritual world around us.
The interesting argument they made was that science cannot explain our minds. Science can explain our DNA, how our bones were formed, and so forth… What it can’t explain is how we get consciousness and unconsciousness — the essence of what makes us individuals.
See, scientists can’t explain the immaterial part of us, and that’s exactly what your mind is. It’s not a physical thing.
I would argue that our minds are what connect us to the spiritual side of our being. It’s the part of us that can’t be reasoned or explained. It’s the side of us that can connect with God and help us discern what is happening around us spiritually that impacts us physically. It’s where much of the spiritual warfare is engaged (notice, I didn’t say all spiritual warfare), and it’s the part of us that will live on after we fall asleep in the Lord until He gives us a new body in the resurrection that is without sin and is perfect. One that will never die, age, or be in need of anything.
The Bible has a lot to say about our minds and how we are to take care of them, lest we fall into temptation, separate ourselves from God, and end up in a bad spiritual state.
Let’s look at a few verses. In this context, it explains why our minds are so important.
Romans 12:2 – Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
1 Corinthians 2:16 – for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?”But we have the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Colossians 3:2 – Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Philippians 4:8 – Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Hebrews 8:10 – This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
1 Peter 1:13 – Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
There are a lot more passages, but these passages are ones that really stand out to me. They highlight that our minds are the passageways to the immaterial, spiritual world.
It works both ways…
If you deal with evil things, you will encounter evil spirits. If you play with a Ouija Board, you will open yourself up to demonic spirits. If you participate in the Occult, you will become privy to demonic oppression and possession.
Likewise, if you partake of the sacraments, read Scripture, and put the things of God in your mind, you will view the world and the spiritual things happening around you through a different set of lenses.
It will impact how you react to other people, circumstances, and situations, and empower you in times of spiritual warfare. You’ll learn to discern the presence of evil and how it is trying to thwart you.
Satan’s tactic isn’t to scare or intimidate you, or any other thing. He has one purpose… To remove the veiling of the Holy Spirit over you and strip the presence and influence of God in your heart and mind! He will attempt to distort the understanding of God’s truth, leading individuals away from a life centered on Christ, hoping you will gradually erode or reject Christ’s teachings, presence, and influence in your thoughts, actions, and beliefs.
If Satan can erase Christ from your life and sever your mind’s connection with Him, he’ll destroy the lifeline between the individual and the ultimate source of truth and redemption.
So, do you see why your mind is so powerful?
It’s the spiritual connection between you and the heavenly places.
This is all the evidence I need to know that God is real. It explains good and evil in the world, our actions, and reveals truth and lies.
Science can never explain this, though it will try.
Here’s the truth.
The Bible says faith is a mystery.
In 1 Timothy 3:9, the Apostle Paul tells us, “holding to the mystery of the faith…” Colossians 4:3 calls us to “speak forth the mystery of Christ.” There are at least 6 passages in the New Testament that speak to the mysteries of Christ, His incarnation, the Church, and the rapture.
The Greek word for mystery (pisti) simply means this… something was hidden and is now revealed.
We can’t scientifically prove God. We can find evidence of Him in creation, history, and science, but those who deny Him will always find a way to argue otherwise. It is only by faith through the Holy Spirit that truth is revealed.
Once again, it’s in the mind of the person.
