Over the years, I’ve heard many couples say they married the wrong person.
For the Christian, is this even possible?
This is why our faith and theology are so important.
The world would tell you to do whatever makes you happy.
After all, don’t you deserve it?
If your spouse doesn’t make you happy anymore, our culture wants you to believe you married the wrong the person.
I personally believe this is another lie and trap set by Satan. He wants your marriage to fail and any story he can persuade you to believe is a win for him. Remember, the devil is the great deceiver and the master of lies.
Here’s the thing, the Biblical worldview doesn’t allow for this kind of mindset. If you’re married, then you’re married to the person you’re supposed to be married to.
In Matthew 19:6, Jesus said, “So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
There are a couple of points in this short but powerful verse.
The first is that you are no longer your own. You and your spouse are one flesh. You are one union. You are no longer individuals. Your marriage is a covenant relationship between a husband, wife, and God. There is no other relationship on Earth that can compare to marriage.
You share something together that no other relationship can come close to.
Second, God established your marriage. He joined you and made you one in this covenant. Therefore, do not separate the marriage from who you are as an individual or a couple. In Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul reminds us that no one hates their own flesh, but instead, they nurture and take care of it.
If you’re questioning whether or not you married the right person, you’re asking the wrong question.
The right question is…
How can you surrender to Christ and in doing so allow the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the amazing person you married so you can live in the most intimate of human relationships with peace, joy, patience, kindness, and love?
Your spouse isn’t perfect.
Neither are you.
Yet, together… you’re wonderfully woven by God who brought the two of you together.
Be open to embracing this truth and asking the Lord to be the glue that holds your relationship together.
