Fighting fair in a marriage can help couples resolve conflict and maintain respect. This is a crucial aspect of a healthy marriage.
Yet, far too many couples have the opposite experience. Conflict is rarely resolved and new ones are often created during a fight.
Respect?
That’s all too often out the window. For many, fights devolve into personal attacks that cause more hurt feelings, disappointment, and pain.
If you want to fight in a way that produces a great marriage, start by setting some rules that you both agree upon.
For example, agree that you won’t get personal and name-call or insult one another. You may agree not to stonewall one another. Whatever the rules are, you decide and agree to enforce them together. If one spouse breaks the rules, the other should respectfully remind them of the rules you created together and ask that they be followed.
When done well, fighting can be a beneficial part of your marriage. You can build transparency, confidence, trust, and intimacy by how you handle conflict. Conflict doesn’t have to be a negative. It can be a positive experience.
