Sex is a highly emotional act. It’s the pinnacle of intimacy, but it’s not all that intimacy is. Intimacy is more than sex. If your sex life is misfiring it’s likely because something else is struggling in the marriage.
For emotional and physical intimacy to work it requires three other parts (in order):
- Transparency
- Confidence
- Trust
Transparency is about honesty, faithfulness, love, and open communication. Your spouse is the most private person in your life. You should be able to share your innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences with them.
The more two-way vulnerability there is, the greater the security of the marriage.
Confidence is about experience over time. If transparency is happening, it creates positive experiences (even in the midst of trials, suffering, and pain) between the two of you. Confidence in one another leads to the next step…
Trust. It’s the ultimate expression of faith in one another. Without trust, you cannot get to intimacy. The more transparency and confidence you have in one another, the greater the level of trust.
If you can learn to trust your spouse with all of you, the emotional and sexual intimacy will begin to grow again.
See, sex doesn’t work if either of you is emotionally disconnected. Whether you’ve been married a few years or less, or for 40 years, it doesn’t matter.
