Over the last fifty years, something devastating happened to masculinity. A convergence of social issues has attempted to eradicate all that was bad about men regardless of the consequences.
Compounding matters, men have been leaving the Church at an alarming rate. Without God, what is the standard for masculinity?
This was always a tragedy waiting to happen. While feminism sunk its teeth into ripping out the worst attributes of masculinity, it has succeeded in something much more destructive… The downfall of society. Men have become angry, hostile, uninterested, disengaged, and apathetic. They are struggling to understand the meaning of life and find satisfaction or fulfillment in much of anything.
In the modern world, masculinity has been defined as toxic and harmful. Men who are assertive, bold, commanding confident, or direct are seen as threatening.
This has led to a core question about our identity as a male – What is a man?
Yet, society, and especially the Church, needs men. We must help men rediscover that Godly masculinity is a gift from Him and that each of us has dignity and purpose.
So, stay with me through this article. I’ll first talk about the problem and then share a solution to this growing challenge.

The fact is that civilization needs masculinity and feminism. They complement one another. Yet, the disintegration of the family and the demonization of men over the last several decades has resulted in a rotting culture.
The bottom line is that men aren’t doing well. They are starved for purpose, respect, and friendship. Men have become passive, unengaged, and disinterested in pursuing any ambitions.
That includes work, marriage, family, and church.
Unfortunately, many boys never had a male role model growing up to show them how to be masculine without being cocky, exaggerating, or harnessing their strength and aggression. No one has shown them how to channel these things in God-honoring ways.
Few men have had a positive male authority to teach them how to become strong and decisive; yet understanding, kind, gentle, and joyful.
What does the Bible say about manhood?
What does a Godly man look like?
There are nine basic principles I’ve identified in Scripture. No doubt there is more…
- He is humble before His God.
- He controls his lustful, fleshly, appetites.
- He protects his family.
- He provides for his family.
- He leads his family.
- He loves and honors his wife above all others.
- He respects others and is truthful without being hurtful.
- He lifts up the people in his life (work, friends, neighbors, and family) by encouraging them to reach their God-given potential.
- He is gentle, kind, patient, loving, and faithful.
